Left 4 Dead 2 Will Feature Melee Weapons

Left 4 Dead 2 has some fairly cool news today, not exactly the type of news that justifies the game’s beyond DLC price point, considering this is basically a glorified DLC collection in box release form, but it’s cool news nonetheless. Valve has announced through a very entertaining screen shot of a man wearing an England hat, braining a zombie wearing an Australia cricket uniform, with a cricket bat, to show that Left 4 Dead 2 will feature melee weapons. The ability to randomly find items from your environment to beat the hell out of incoming zombies is bound to be pretty cool. Especially considering the addition of a cricket bat as a weapon, ala Shaun of the Dead. And really, if you’re into zombie anything, who doesn’t love Shaun of the Dead?

But another interesting point here is that, like the zombies in hazmat suits that have already been revealed, apparently there are going to be more zombies wearing protective headgear in L4D2. Does this mean the difficulty level is going to be scaled up a bit on account of zombies basically wearing body armor? I’m intrigued to see exactly how this will play out, I have to say. Even if I was a little iffy about L4D2 in the first place.

But I still don’t know that Valve can really justify making Left 4 Dead 2 it’s own release, opposed to being released as DLC upgrades. For the most part I agree with the pissed off L4D fans that say this is bad for two reasons. Firstly this will split the amount of people playing the game in half at the least, as some will still be playing through the original, whereas others will move on to L4D2, leaving you with a much smaller audience of people to play with. Secondly, this means despite Valve saying support on Left 4 Dead would always be prevalent, clearly the first game will be put on the back burner, so that more time can go into development and upkeep of Left 4 Dead 2.
But then I guess all questions, and criticisms, will be answered when the game ships.
