Resistance is a series that Sony could have handled much, much better. I’m overall disappointed with the way the series has progressed, and that’s not to say that the games aren’t fantastic as far as FPS fests are concerned. Just that Sony had the real makings of a classic franchise with Resistance’s premise, but I feel as though they haven’t made as much out of the games as could have been done. The first two Resistance games squandered their overall appeal with a story that had a fantastic premise, and little beyond that in terms of real plot value.
And then in a confusing move we get the game with the most fantastic story, in PSP’s Resistance: Retribution, which has a personal well evolved and fantastic plotline, but the horrible clunky shooter gameplay that only a PSP could offer. Which just begs the question from me, why didn’t the best elements get combined for Resistance 2???
I seriously don’t understand why the first two games just couldn’t fully get the involved and entertaining story correct, and yet Retribution gets the series best storyline, and worst PSP lame gameplay. I’m baffled.
And I’m also led to believe that Resistance 3 needs to really up the series quality in the story area to cement itself as a true reason to play shooters on PS3, because I’m just not convinced that we’ve gotten the best out of Insomniac. I’m growing a little weary of spending anymore money on the series until some things shape up, seriously.
God Of War: Chains Of Olympus. The injection of brilliance that the PSP desperately needed, and the Sony support that the handheld required to survive. The biggest mistake in Sony’s handling of the PSP is that they haven’t acquired enough big exclusive licenses for great games. I mean sure you have a couple awesome Grand Theft Auto games, and then there are the two Star Wars Battlefront games, but other than that it’s awful slapped together handheld messes, or re-released PS one games. Which is crap because, yes we’ve all played the original Playstation, and loved it, but I want new games for my handheld, not the stuff I’ve conquered eighty times in the past.
And if you’re going to make a whole section of the Playstation Network store dedicated to PS one games you can download, why not the greatest Playstation game ever made, Metal Gear Solid??? I would kill to be able to download that to my handheld. That would be the best thing ever, because not only does Metal Gear have killer plot/gameplay, but if you huff it you can kill the game in two hours. Making Metal Gear Solid the ideal distraction for being dragged along to an event/family affair you didn’t want to attend in the first place.
But back to the point of all this, thank you Sony for releasing another game that was actually worth my money for PSP. God Of War is perfect, because the development team kept the epic feel of the God Of War games intact, despite the system’s small size, and pushed the PSP to it’s graphical limits. So not only do you get an unparalleled handheld experience, but you get an event that’s true to the series of games that spawned it.
Bravo, and thank you for offering up something that will distract me from having to be social in public for some time to come.
I now love Playstation Network. My PSP has really needed a boost lately, and I don’t know why, but I had never upgraded my software to properly incorporate Playstation Network until recently, and I’m mad I hadn’t done so earlier. I didn’t realise there were a ton of PSP games you could purchase for direct download to your PSP, or that there were so many PS one games available, for only 6 bucks I might add.
So I downloaded Suikoden, and it is freaking awesome to have the epic battletasticness of the original Suikoden in the palm of my hand ready for play as I dodge chatting relatives in my efforts to keep gaming through Christmas.
Also, Xbox has a new sham, free Xbox Live Arcade games, for the small price of signing up to a one year membership. And the selection you’re given for your free game? Horrible. You can choose between Marble Blast, Zuma, Assault Heroes, 3D Mini Golf, and as though you hadn’t already beaten it a million times Sonic The Hedgehog. Blah I say.
I’ll be sticking to my PSP and the slew of PS one games I’ll be downloading in the next few days to re-experience, or experience for the first time. Woo hoo.
Spider-Man: Web Of Shadows set out with a lofty goal, make a next-gen Spider-Man game that isn’t completely awful like it’s predecessors Spider-Man 3, and Spider-Man: Friend Or Foe. Already as the videos and gameplay demos have shown, WOS at least seems to be on the right track. Presenting truly next-gen graphics, instead of the ugly PS2 textures sported in the PS3 and Xbox 360 editions of Spider-Man 3. As well as the revolutionary idea to give players complete freedom in dictating Spider-Man’s actions.
Unlike the faux freedom of Spider-Man 2 & 3, WOS promises the ability to destruct essentially everything in the environment. Meaning now you will be able to abuse Spider-Man’s powers like never before, using cars as weapons, busting up storefronts, and terrorizing citizens if you so choose. With this newfound freedom will come reactions from the city driven by how you perform your actions as Spider-Man. Hurl cars all over town and bust up any number of innocent civilians, and your average Joe pedestrian will run from you in terror. Or become Spider-Man and save the city from the villainy afoot, without destroying everything in sight, and the people will praise your presence.
Developer Activision has also expertly crafted the perfect open world scenario for a Spider-Man game. Arch-nemesis Venom has found a way to clone himself using his symbiotic suit. The subsequent symbiotes then form strongholds and take over the city, turning it’s citizens into symbiote zombies. Which then forces S.H.I.E.L.D. to quarantine New York, forcing Spider-Man and a band of heroes to be trapped inside, leaving only themselves to combat the symbiote horde.
Of course all of this is just one big excuse to bring back Spidey’s symbiotic suit, with which Activision promises your strength and fighting combos will improve to ridiculous levels. Combined with the ability to change between the red suit and black suit on the fly means your movements and combat strategies will be incredibly diverse, maximizing the amount of carnage you will be able to create in a fully destructible New York.
In case you wanted to know, the announced secondary characters in the game are as follows:
