White Stripes Come To Rock Band

Tuesday saw the release of some long awaited White Stripes material for Rock Band.  I know I’ve been waiting for this forever, because Jack White isn’t the greatest guitarist, and Meg certainly isn’t the best drummer, but the White Stripes’ music is fun.  Getting a group of friends together to rock out and pretend play “Icky Thump”, “Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground”, and “Girl, You Have No Faith In Medicine”.

My favorite of the three being Icky Thump, mostly because I’m a guitarist myself and it’s really fun to play the chorus breakdown solos.  Trying out the Rock Band versions was especially fun.  I’m still not the biggest fan of the music game genre, but Rock Band and Guitar Hero are still fun distractions.

Guitar Hero needs to take some lessons from Rock Band though, as Rock Band seems to make more tracks available.  I’m all for as much music available as possible to play.

But I couldn’t ever see being a hardcore player.  Mostly because I still don’t see why you’d spend so much time playing plastic instruments when you could learn the real thing.  Actually playing guitar and drums is cooler, and tends to attract more ladies…or dudes, if that’s your thing.

Bully 2 Surprise Announcement

One of the greatest things in the world is when people accidentally reveal news they probably weren’t supposed to reveal.  Like composer Shawn Lee, who told The Gaming Liberty “It looks like I will be doing the soundtrack for Bully 2 in the not so distant future.”.

Rockstar is yet to announce any plans on a sequel to Bully, but if Shawn Lee’s quote is accurate, looks like the game is definitely in production.  That’s a good thing, as Bully went unfortunately unnoticed back in 2006 when the game was released.  For some reason a sandbox style game featuring a misbehaving teenager didn’t appeal to the masses as much as gangsters that shoot hookers.

But Bully was a fantastic game in it’s own right.  For the most part a high school simulation that allowed you to live out your greatest trouble making fantasies, and then some.  If you haven’t yet played the original, I’d highly recommend the game, whether on PS2 or Xbox 360.  The 360 version is great, although it doesn’t offer anything over the PS2 version besides some expanded content and higher resolution textures.

Although you’ll want to make sure you download the 360 patch, because the original release of Bully: Scholorship Edition was full of glitches and bugs.  As for the Wii version…well, any Wii version should be avoided unless that’s your only option.

DJ Hero Complete Track List Announced

The full set list for the upcoming DJ Hero has been announced, and considering the songs that have been confirmed, I’m definitely willing to give this a shot.  I’m still not 100% positive on how well this will play out, or how effectively the DJ peripheral will function.  I’m just not completely sure that this whole concept really translates to the music game format.  Just like with Guitar Hero, I wonder if your time would be better served actually trying to create your own mixes, instead of punching buttons in time to someone else’s.

Iggy Pop Announced For Lego Rock Band

New announcement regarding the upcoming awfulness that is Lego Rock Band.  Iggy Pop has been confirmed as one of the first musicians to appear in the game.  In case you weren’t aware Lego Rock Band is the Harmonix alternative for parents that think Rock Band’s rock music is inappropriate for the younger gamers.  So Lego Rock Band is going to offer a more family friendly music experience, and if you know Iggy Pop, he definitely falls into the family friendly category.  So this move doesn’t confuse me at all.

Although I don’t really see the point of a Lego Rock Band.  I understand you want to protect your children from music you find offensive, but Rock Band’s track lists have always been fairly tame.  The announced songs for LRB really sound terrible, and not very entertaining for faux instrument play.

  • Blur “Song 2”
  • Carl Douglas “Kung Fu Fighting”
  • Europe “The Final Countdown”
  • Good Charlotte “Boys And Girls”
  • Pink “So What”

I’m not saying they’re not entertaining from a technical stand point, but if you’re a concerned parent, do you really want to have to listen to your kid playing The Final Countdown or Kung Fu Fighting 8 million times?  I’d consider that right up there with waterboarding for interrogation methods that should be avoided because of their classification as torture.  Why not just buy your kids The Beatles Rock Band?  The Beatles are extremely non-threatening by today’s standards, and they have a much richer catalog of music that you can both enjoy.

I’d much rather hear The Beatles over and over again, personally.  And I’m not even a fan of The Beatles.

Courtney Love Sues Guitar Hero Over Kurt Cobain

Courtney Love is a little weird sometimes, in her perceptions, and I find it really entertaining.  Take the most recent controversy in which Courtney launched a Twitter attack on Activision for putting Kurt Cobain as a playable character in Guitar Hero 5.  Courtney went on to say that she hadn’t authorized such a thing, and as the person with sole control over his estate she was going to sue Activision for using Kurt in such a way.  And at first I was thinking, wow Guitar Hero guys, did you just make a horrifically big mistake?  Because Courtney and the surviving members of Nirvana are very protective about how Kurt Cobain is used in the media.

Then today Activision fires back saying, Courtney Love signed all the necessary papers for them to include Kurt Cobain in the game.  So did she forget?  I mean what the hell?  She signs the papers and then apparently forgets in the months following, then when Kurt Cobain is announced as a playable character she flips out.  I find the whole ordeal fairly entertaining, considering Activision has stated that they have all the necessary documentation to prove that they have the right to make a digital Cobain.

I don’t understand the big deal though.  Kurt is dead and he was a music icon rivaling literally anyone else in the history of rock.  Nirvana changed the entire face of things in music, and their influence is still heard in modern rock bands.  Kurt Cobain belongs to the public now, so just let his fans experience him in the ways that they no longer can.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 Cover Art Revealed

The box art for Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 has been released, and I’m a little unimpressed.  I’ve never really been sold on PES over FIFA, mostly because of the fact that PES can’t afford to get the rights to the vast majority of football clubs the way that EA can with FIFA.  I’ll hand it to PES that the quality of the simulation is for the most part better, and more realistic.  But FIFA just has the bells and whistles that truly represent why this is the world’s most popular sport.

Not to mention the cover art.  Look at PES.  You’ve got arguably the two best strikers in world football right now, in Lionel Messi and Fernando Torres, and they both look bored to tears, acting like they’re actually playing.

Whereas take the FIFA 10 US artwork, which has been released for a while now, you have Frank Lampard front and central shouting, and looking passionate about the game.  Although Blanco and Sacha Kljestan look fairly bored just like Torres and Messi, still, I think the FIFA cover inspires more passion.  Even if you’re not a Chelsea fan, which I most definitely am not.  At any rate, I’m really droning on about nothing, so decide for yourselves.  I’ll be sticking with FIFA solely based on the more fully fleshed out Be A Pro mode, and that’s become the meat and potatoes of my videogame footballing.

Guitar Hero 5 Track List Announced

Guitar Hero 5’s final track list has been announced.  The game will include 85 brand new tracks for the series with bands ranging from Coldplay, to Children Of Bodom, spanning the entire rock spectrum of musical tastes.  Most of these sound pretty fun, and seem like no brainers for Guitar Hero to have included previously, but better late than never I guess.

Also announced was the ability to play as your Xbox avatar in the 360 version of Guitar Hero 5.  That’s pretty cool I guess.  I’m just happy something is coming in the pipeline to make avatars actually useful, instead of lame useless pieces of personalization that have an incredibly underwhelming amount of customization options.

At any rate, here are the songs to be included in Guitar Hero 5:

Grease Videogame Announced For Wii

In perhaps the most odd decision in videogame history, 505 has acquired the rights to create a videogame based upon the musical Grease for the Wii.  Teaming up with Paramount Digital, apparently 505 is going to create an authentic and true to the film adaptation of Grease, complete with motion control.  I have to say…I don’t really understand who this is supposed to appeal to exactly.  I understand that the Wii is the gimmicky family oriented console, but are there really enough people clamoring for a game based on Grease that it’s worth 505 and Paramount investing the time and money?

I guess they see something I don’t.

In other gimmicky peripheral news that isn’t quite so lame, apparently one of the big plans for the upcoming Tony Hawk: Ride board peripheral, is a Silver Surfer videogame.  Or at least that’s what a rumor reported by Kotaku.com says.  I have to say, I don’t exactly know how it would work, but I’m most definitely interested to see the end result.

And finally, in World of Warcraft news, apparently Blizzard has applied for a trademark to the name Cataclysm.  Of course this has inspired rampant internet rumors implying that this is Blizzard planning the next expansion pack for World of Warcraft.  Also inspiring those internet rumors to say that this is the big announcement to be had from BlizzCon 2009 next month.  And I guess that would make things interesting, so I hope it’s info about the next WoW expansion.

Legacy Interactive Announces House Game

Legacy Interactive has announced a brand new Nintendo DS, Wii and PC title currently in production based on the television show House.  The game will feature five cases for you to solve using the same actual medical procedures, and crazy diagnostician techniques from the show.  And oh yes, breaking into patients homes to find out more about them will be an included feature.

As a fan of House all of this is sounding fairly entertaining, even considering how horrid most television series cash-ins tend to be.  But Legacy Interactive has a good history of medical/detective based games in the past, and House falls into those categories, so the game is in good hands.  Although there is still one glaring disappointment that will still make me weary of playing the game.

Hugh Laurie is a brilliant actor.  In case you didn’t know, he’s British, and that’s a flawless American accent that he uses on House, and in so doing he’s created a unique style of speaking and emoting for everyone’s favorite ornery doctor.  But Hugh Laurie is also a big star, and landing someone like him for a videogame would add a massive amount to the low budget for a game like this, meaning his services won’t be provided, and Dr. House will have to be voiced by a sound-a-like voice actor.  And that makes me nervous.

I’ve played Star Wars games in the past with Obi-Wan Kenobi sound-a-likes, and the unique way Ewan McGregor spoke in the prequels seemed lost on them, resulting in laughably bad dialogue deliveries.  I really hope that doesn’t happen with House…as that would make the game almost unplayable to me, but I’ll still give it a fair shot.

Bungie Announces New Halo

Bungie announced a brand new Halo game, of course only releasing a teaser photo and no details about the upcoming adventure, entitled Halo: Reach.  There was a teaser accompanying the announcement at E3 which apparently just showed a short clip of the fall of Reach from before the first Halo game.  So apparently this is going to be a new Halo game in which you  play through the fall of Reach, perhaps going back to a time when there was more than just one Spartan left.  Which means this Halo could bring in some badass new features and multiplayer options.

I’m just glad to see Bungie hard at work on the titles that will continue to follow Halo 3, just like the upcoming Halo: ODST.

And speaking of Halo, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime, uttered damning words about the Wii’s upcoming FPS The Conduit, in that the Wii and Nintendo are banking on the title to attract the Halo audience to the Wii.  Now I’m pretty sure that almost every time in the past something has been said to be a Halo killer in any way shape or form, the game has fallen sorely short of any expectations.  I’m really not expecting anything different with this one, as The Conduit doesn’t look to be shaping up as anything particularly amazing for the Wii.

But I am definitely interested in getting a spectacular game for the console finally, so I can dust off my Wii, and maybe even play it for a while again. . .
